Hepatitis B viral infection (HBV) is one of the world’s most significant infectious disease threats with more than 290 million people infected globally. It is the leading cause of liver disease and complications from chronic HBV lead to an estimated 820,000 deaths each year.

The current standard of care for HBV is suboptimal and requires patients to maintain a life-long medication regimen. While a sustained functional cure for HBV has the potential to be transformational for patients – mitigating their risk of disease progression and liver cancer and giving them greater freedom from a lifelong treatment – the only currently available option delivers a mere 3-7% functional cure rate.

As one of our leading clinical development programs, Brii Bio is building a broad pipeline of novel HBV therapeutic candidates in order to improve the probability of achieving a high rate of functional cure for each subpopulation of HBV patients. Each of our HBV candidates has a unique therapeutic modality with proven clinical benefit targeting this chronic infection, which allows us to explore an expansive set of potential combination treatment options for various patient subgroups.

There are more than 38 million people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection around the world. While therapies for this lifelong infection have advanced significantly in the past several decades, patients today desire new treatment options that enable more convenient administration over the current standard of care once-daily pill regimen. This lifelong daily dosing is considered by many with HIV to be problematic and highly disruptive to their daily life.

We are focused on advancing a potential first-of-its-kind, oral, once-weekly treatment option for HIV to potentially reduce the burden of disease for patients, improve their quality of life and ensure better adherence to therapy. 

Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites evolve to no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines, making it significantly harder, and sometimes impossible, to treat both common and emerging infections. In 2019, bacterial AMR alone was associated with nearly five million deaths worldwide.

By developing novel treatment options for multidrug resistant (MDR) and extensive drug resistant (XDR) gram-negative infections, Brii Bio is working to address a full spectrum of AMR infections across a variety of patients and care settings with the aim or mitigating the public health threats of today, as well as those in the future.

Nontuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease is a rare, chronic and progressive infectious disease caused by bacteria known as mycobacteria that leads to irreversible lung damage and can be fatal. The prevalence of NTM lung disease is increasing worldwide and the 5-year mortality rate is between 10-48%. However, antimicrobial resistance and disease misdiagnosis can impact appropriate treatment planning for patients.

We are developing a once-daily oral treatment for patients with chronic NTM lung disease, with an initial focus on treatment-refractory Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease, the most common subtype with high unmet need.

As the most significant public health challenge in a century, the rapid spread of COVID-19 has caused more than 6.5 million deaths worldwide and created lasting health problems in approximately 10-20% of infected individuals.

Leveraging our infectious disease expertise and working with our globally recognized partners, Brii Bio successfully progressed a novel monoclonal antibody therapy, amubarvimab/romlusevimab combination, from discovery to approval and commercialization in China in just 27 months. The amubarvimab/romlusevimab combination is the first locally-discovered and approved SARS-CoV-2 target-specific treatment in China.
